NEET-UG 2026: The recent cancellation of the NEET-UG exam in India has raised serious questions about the major flaws and security arrangements in the country's medical entrance examination system. Amidst this controversy, the examination systems of other countries at the global level have come to the center of discussion. Many major countries of the world conduct medical and other entrance exams for millions of students, but incidents of paper leakage are rare. Countries like America, China and Britain have developed such robust and hi-tech systems where paper leakage becomes almost impossible. These countries use permanent computer-based examination centers instead of temporary school-based examination centres.

Difference between paper and computer based exam

A single-day, paper-based NEET exam is conducted for more than 23 lakh candidates in India. Unlike this traditional method, other countries around the world use computer-based exams, multiple exam dates and strong digital security protocols. The NEET UG exam in India is conducted on a single day at thousands of centers across the country with the same question paper. For this, the printing, transportation, safe storage and distribution of question papers across the country has to be done in a highly confidential manner. According to officials, all these stages are the most vulnerable to leaks and malpractice. While countries like America and Britain are completely dependent on computer based examination for medical admission.

China's 'gaokao' exam and tighter security

The 'Gaokao' exam conducted in China is considered one of the biggest exams in the world. This exam is conducted amidst very strict and tight security arrangements. High-resolution surveillance cameras, biometric verification, signal jammers and encrypted systems are used at these exam centers. Not only this, highly monitored high-security facilities are also used for printing the question papers. While small-scale incidents of individual-level cheating may occur during exams in China, large-scale paper leaks are rare.

America's 'MCAT' method

In America, the Medical College Entrance Test i.e. MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) is conducted on multiple dates throughout the year at specially prepared permanent test centers. Here, instead of giving the same question paper to all the candidates, different types of question sets are prepared by the software from a huge question bank. As each student gets a separate set, the risk of any one question paper being leaked becomes negligible.

Britain's 'UCAT' system

Britain also has a modern and secure exam system similar to the US, known as the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT). These exams are not conducted on a specific day, but over several days or weeks online. In this system, candidates can self-select the time slot according to their convenience at authorized centers equipped with strict online monitoring and secure software.

Lack of digital infrastructure and challenges in India

It is not easy to make NEET exam completely online or computer based in India, as there are approximately 25 lakh students appearing for the exam. Such a large number requires extensive expansion of computer-based examination facilities, which are not available at present. Creating this kind of digital infrastructure is a big challenge, especially in rural areas and small towns. Apart from this, deficiencies like poor internet connectivity, frequent power outages and inadequate technical support in many remote areas of the country are becoming the biggest hurdles in implementing the online examination system.
