..So did Trump fail? Even after the talks with Putin in Alaska, the war did not calm down, on the contrary, it increased
Ukraine Russia War: The meeting between American President Donald Trump and Russian President Putin in Alaska on August 15, 2025 was called a 'turning point' for peace in the Ukraine war, but the result was the opposite. Trump had threatened Russia with serious consequences if there was no ceasefire, but after the meeting, Russia intensified its attacks, which has raised questions about Trump's Alaska diplomacy.
Attack immediately after the talks
Ukraine alleges that immediately after the Putin-Trump talks in Alaska, Russia attacked Ukraine with 85 drones and one Iskander ballistic missile. Ukraine's air defense system stopped 61 Russian drones.
Drone and missile attacks on August 20-21
On August 20-21, 2025, Russia launched a major attack on Ukraine with 574 drones and 40 missiles, focused on the Kyiv, Lviv, Sumy, Chernivtsi, and Dnipropetrovsk regions. The attack killed 9 civilians and injured 19, including children. During the attack, Russia captured several villages in Donetsk and one person was killed and 14 injured in the Sumy region.
On August 28, 2025, Russia launched its largest attack on Kyiv with 629 drones and missiles, killing 14 people and wounding 48. The attack also damaged the European Union building, which prompted Ukraine to retaliate.
Attacks on Druzhba pipeline and oil refineries
In response to the Russian attack, Ukraine attacked the Druzhba pipeline and two oil refineries, forcing Russia to halt petroleum exports. The attacks show that the Alaska meeting between Trump and Putin, which Ukraine was absent from, failed to bring peace, as the situation did not improve even after the meeting. Meanwhile, several reports also reported that the next meeting could also be between Putin and Zelensky.
Why did the fighting intensify?
Putin's main demands for peace in Ukraine are that Ukraine stay away from NATO, Russia maintain control over the Donbas region (Donetsk and Luhansk), and reduce Ukraine's military strength. However, Ukrainian President Zelensky rejected these demands, especially the territorial concessions, calling them against his constitution. After this rejection, Russia has intensified its attacks, while Zelensky says that an end to the war is only possible on the condition of Ukraine's territorial integrity.
The German Chancellor's statement further increased tensions
Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has made it clear that there will be no meeting between President Zelensky and President Putin. He further said, 'This is different from the agreement reached between Trump and President Putin in Washington last week.' This statement by the German Chancellor has made it clear that Ukraine is in no hurry to stop the war. Even if Ukraine talks about a ceasefire, it is not ready to accept any conditions arbitrarily.
